Andrei S. Markovits has been honored with a Festschrift (a collection of writings published in honor of a scholar) in Germany for his work as a political scientist.
The citation reads, Andrei S. Markovits, child of Romanian survivors of the Holocaust, has influenced the political and academic debates in Germany over many decades. In the 1980s, the American political scientist analyzed the German trade unions, especially their structural sexism; in the 1990s, he predicted correctly that "green will defeat red" (as the leading voice of the left); and after 9/11 Markovits's voice was among the most prominent and important in pointing to the connection between anti-Americanism and antisemitism. In additional areas of research and scholarship focusing on sports and human-animal relations, Markovits offers a transatlantic comparison that highlights his special approach to the social sciences. This volume features contributions by Markovits's colleagues -- Ruth Hatlapa, Hans-Otto Hemmer, Ulf Liebe, Benedikt Jahnke, Stephen Milder, Lars Rensmann, Sascha Spoun and the two editors -- and presents the thematic topics that have guided Markovits's scholarly life. Additionally, the book includes texts by Andrei S. Markovits that have hitherto never been published in Germany.
Andrei "Andy" Markovits is currently an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor and the Karl W. Deutsch Collegiate Professor of Comparative Politics and German Studies at the University of Michigan.
