Richard Matland, University of Michigan Department of Political Science PhD alumnus (1991), passed away on Sunday August 12, 2018. Rick joined the Loyola University Chicago political science faculty in 2006 as the Helen Houlahan Rigali Chaired Professor, teaching both undergraduate– and graduate–level courses focused on political trust and behavior, the role of women in politics, and research design and methodology. Rick’s research and teaching spanned several fields within the discipline of political science, including comparative politics, public policy, women’s studies, and American politics. Colleagues describe Rick as engaging, curious, and an inspiration who challenged others to think outside of the box.

Professor Matland's friends and colleagues are invited to the joint reception of the 2018 APSA Elections, Public Opinion, and Voting Behavior section and the Representation and Electoral Systems section taking place on Friday, August 31, 2018 at 7:30 pm in the Sheraton Commonwealth. The evening will encourage conversation for those wanting to come together to remember and honor Rick.
