Student Involvement

The Neuroscience Students Association is a student organization for students with an interest in neuroscience. This organization provides networking opportunities, seminars, and exposure to the depth of neuroscience. The organization also aims to actively participate in service to its community and provide the public with information on neuroscience, health, and general science topics. They hope to broaden their horizons of members by exposing them to medicine, public health, research, and engineering. Neuroscience is, at its very core, an interdisciplinary subject. It requires a relatively deep understanding of biology, chemistry, physics, and psychology. Beyond that, when it is crossed with computer programming, electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, or animal studies, it gains an even broader scope of possibilities. The Biology Student Alliance is a student organization intended for Neuroscience, CMB, Biology, Plant Biology, Microbiology and Biochemistry concentrators, as well as any pre-med or science-oriented students who are interested in learning more about MCDB-related topics. BSA provides opportunities for undergraduates to enhance their learning in the natural sciences and gain exposure to various careers in scientific research and health-related fields. BSA aims to foster scientific discussion and stimulate innovative thinking in biology. We seek to build and sustain meaningful relationships among like-minded peers. We offer informal tutoring, academic advising, community service events (such as presenting simple, exciting demos to elementary students), and coordinate events with various faculty guest speakers to help introduce undergraduates to various research fields. In addition, we provide a space for students to present their own research in a low-pressure environment and give participants constructive feedback to help acquire skills that will be applicable to their current and future academic/professional careers. The Society of Biology Students is an informal student group for students interested in Biology in general. The group was formed to help include students whose careers are not necessarily headed toward the human medical fields (although medical-bound students are very welcome to the group!). Student majors range from EEB to MCDB to Neurobiology and everything in between. Meetings are irregular and generally focused on topic-specific items, such as grad school applications and preparations, interesting speakers on biological topics, or group activities related to Biology. The group always welcomes students at any level, but we are especially in need in 2013 of a Junior-level leader who can carry the leadership torch and help stimulate interest and participation by other Biology students. The Student Society for Stem Cell Research (U-M Ann Arbor Chapter) was founded in August of 2003. We are an international network dedicated to the advancement of scientific research for cures. We believe that stem cell research will revolutionize the field of medicine.
