Our Values

The Linguistics Department strives for academic excellence by fostering an environment of inclusivity, civility, and respect for all individuals, communities and the languages they use. Together, we are dedicated to promoting a safe, healthy, respectful, and interculturally dynamic departmental community.

We seek and value diversity and inclusion in our research, teaching, service, and practice. People with different backgrounds, identities and perspectives should be heard, involved, and empowered. In our capacity as linguists and educators, we aim to work thoughtfully against discrimination based in (among others) gender, race, age, disability, physical appearance, religion, gender identity, romantic and sexual orientation, and nationality. Moreover, we embrace the role of linguists in protecting the language rights of all people.

We commit to fulfilling our responsibilities honestly and professionally. We promote just, ethical, and honest behavior within our professional community. We expect ourselves and our community members—including faculty, students, staff members, and guests—to adhere to the values described here.
