A collaboration between EEB and the University of Michigan Museum of Natural History.
EEB PEP fosters public outreach skills and prepares students for the types of broader impacts work they may encounter in their future careers, and simultaneously offers museum-goers consistent and engaging interactions with real-life scientists.
Two central goals of the EEB Public Engagement Program are to 1) create equitable opportunities for participation in career-shaping science communication training and 2) normalize public perception of diverse scientists, with an outlook toward opening possibilities for the next generation.
Each PEP cohort receives training in science communication, develops discovery-based dialogue for engagement around their own research, and interacts with museum visitors weekly through the Biodiversity Lab. Upon completion of the program students receive a stipend and certificate acknowledging their training and experience.
Scientific outreach is often unpaid labor and thus exclusive to those who can allocate time and resources to “extracurricular” work. However, outreach is crucial to academic career success and contributes to career satisfaction!
