How can I apply to MCSP?
As soon as you are admitted to the University of Michigan, you become eligible to apply to MCSP. First, you must pay your U-M enrollment deposit. Then you must complete the Michigan Learning Community (MLC) portion of the online Housing Application. This application will be sent to you in March. The MLC portion requires a brief essay about your interest in a particular program.
MCSP is a first-year community with opportunities for Student Leadership in the following years. For this reason, only incoming first-year students are eligible to apply. MCSP does not accept applications from transfer students or students already on campus.
What does MCSP look for in an application?
MCSP looks for students who express a genuine interest in the program. Oftentimes, competitive applicants have engaged in community service opportunities in the past. However, previous service experience is a not a prerequisite for the program. As long as you articulate why you want to join our community and get involved in service (perhaps for the first time), you will be considered a strong applicant.
If I've never done community service before, can I still apply to MCSP?
Yes! As long as you're genuinely interested in doing service, you're welcome to join MCSP.
What’s the acceptance rate? How likely am I to get into the program?
MCSP receives over 300 applications each spring for the following fall semester and we accept approximately 120 first-year students. Don’t let the odds scare you, though! Our staff reads each application very carefully and together we make a decision about whom to accept. Let your commitment shine through in your essay and we’ll see it!
My friend and I are both applying to MCSP. Can we live together?
We’ve found that students transition from high school better when they room blind with someone they don’t know before coming to college. We want you to try new experiences and to come out of your comfort zone as much as possible. For this reason, we do not honor roommate requests.
Do you have to be in LSA to do MCSP?
No, we accept students from all the schools and colleges at U-M. We even have student and faculty advisors for people interested in Engineering and Business.
Can I apply to more than one Michigan Learning Community (MLC)?
Yes! Michigan has many great learning communities, so we understand if you are interested in more than one. On the MLC portion of the online Housing Application, you can rank your preferences for learning communities.
Can I visit MCSP?
Yes! The best time to visit is after a Campus Day session. In the afternoon, the Campus Day program includes break-out sessions for the learning communities during which one of our students will lead you to our residence hall. If you cannot attend Campus Day, please call the MCSP office (734-647-4860) and we will arrange for someone to meet with you.
How much time does MCSP take?
MCSP students are required to take ALA 102 (1 credit) during the fall semester. Additionally, students are required to take an MCSP-linked seminar (counts toward degree) and a "Learning in Community" course. These requirements can be fulfilled with courses from our course guide. Required MCSP courses often count toward other graduation requirements. Students are also invited to all community events and encouraged to get involved with the various opportunities with the community. There is no hour requirement for community service or service hours outside of the required event for ALA 102.
