Title:  Transparency with Surprise: A Study of Dictys' Ephemeris Belli Troiani.

Abstract: Syme in his study of Ammianus in 1968 praises Dictys' rewriting of the Trojan War as a work of high literary merit. In this paper, I try to redeem the reputation of this rather neglected and obscure writer by reconsidering the originality of his narrative devices, as they are defined by Aristotle's Poetics. Thus, I hope to stimulate a discussion regarding the standards of successful writing in the Later Roman Empire, as well as in the Early Byzantine Period.
