Property Rules

The University of Michigan Biological Station (UMBS) manages its property for research and education to understand and sustain ecosystems from local to global scales. We welcome the public to use our hiking and skiing trails. We ask that visitors stay on the trails to avoid interfering with critical research. Arrangements can be made with UMBS for specific additional activities that support our mission.

  • U-M property is open to the public from sunrise to sunset.
  • Motorized vehicles are permitted on designated public roads only.
  • No fires or fireworks are allowed at any time.
  • No camping.
  • Pets must be on a leash at all times. Pet waste must be removed.
  • No littering or dumping of any kind, including yard debris.
  • No collecting, gathering, foraging, altering or removing any objects from the grounds of the UMBS.
  • No trail cameras or drones are allowed at any time.
  • No flags, tags, marks, labels, monuments or structures.
  • No hunting, trapping, or possession of firearms in “No Hunting Zones."
