Dr. Apryl Alexander is the Metrolina Distinguished Scholar in Health & Public Policy at UNC Charlotte. She has been interviewed by numerous media outlets, including The New York Times, USA Today, and NBC Nightly News, about her research and advocacy work. Recently, she received the 2021 Lorraine Williams Greene Award for Social Justice from the American Psychological Association and 2022 Outstanding Teaching and Mentoring awards from the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues.

Current Work

Inspired by her years of providing trauma-based treatment to child and adolescent victims of sexual violence, much of Dr. Alexander's research centers on examining outcomes related to childhood maltreatment among adolescents in the general population, juvenile justice-involved adolescents, and emerging adults. Dr. Alexander also conducts research within the area of human sexuality from a sex positive framework. Lastly, she has several projects in the works related to popular culture and media, including the importance of diverse representation in the media.
