The NCID Pop-Up Research and Scholarship Grants (Pop-Up Grants) provide opportunities for scholars to actively engage in diversity research and scholarship around emerging or re-emerging social issues and disseminate findings quickly to the public. Pop-Up Grant Requests for Proposals (RFPs) are released throughout the year. Some RFPs will focus on addressing specific themes or topics.
All tenure-track, clinical faculty, and research faculty/staff at U-M and across the nation are eligible for this opportunity. Priority is given to members of the Diversity Scholars Network, which is an interdisciplinary, multi-institutional community of scholars to strengthen research and scholarship about diversity, equity and inclusion, and address issues in education and society. Pop-Up Grant projects should develop in reaction to a relevant social issue or proactively address an upcoming social issue (within a 6-month timeframe). The project may also be a new product/tool that fills an immediate need to advance diversity, equity and inclusion.
Given the timeframe and goals of this opportunity, we recommend that scholars use existing datasets or databases, including archival data; analyze extant sources of publicly available information, including social media such as hashtags or online statements; synthesize findings or practices from previous literatures; interview participants of social movements, or other analyses that will help inform this social issue.
Reporting & Dissemination Guidelines
Grant recipients will receive support in planning a dissemination strategy, which will include the production of an Insight Paper. These papers may also serve as the foundation of a scholarly paper, institutional report, policy brief, or media piece.
Within 60 days of the completion of the project, a 4-page Insight Paper draft should be submitted to the NCID. The paper draft should:
- Include an overview of the specific current social issue;
- Describe the significance of the issue to the author’s target audience (e.g. relevance to scholars, practitioners, leaders, and policymakers across the higher education community) and how the project addresses a social issue;
- Include specific recommendations or action steps to guide policy, practice, or future research (as appropriate);
Insight Papers will be disseminated via NCID newsletters, website, and social media outlets. The NCID team will also work with authors to identify key audiences and stakeholders to target their work. Grant recipients may be invited to participate in NCID related events relevant to their project topic and/or asked to share their expertise and project outcomes in formal or informal ways (e.g., give a talk based on project at an NCID event, participate on a panel, lead informal coffee discussions).
In addition, we encourage grant recipients to explore other public publication outlets to disseminate findings in a timely manner. These may include social media campaigns, news articles, blog posts, policy briefs, and institutional reports.
Administration of Fund
The recipient is responsible for working with the NCID staff to arrange for good stewardship of the funds. Funds may be used for travel to research or action sites, travel to conferences to present diversity-related research, student assistant stipends, supplies, guest speaker expenses, and other expenses related to the research or programming needs. (No more than 50% of budget should go towards travel. Also note that funds do not cover indirect costs.) Award amounts are final. Each award stipulates an expiration date, after which any balance remaining is returned to NCID. Any changes in budget items or project period must first be approved by NCID.
- 100-Word Abstract of the Project
- Statement of the Project (no more than 3 pages) that includes:
- A description of why the project is important in addressing emerging social issues
- The objectives and scope of the proposed project
- Specific products/deliverables including a strategy for public dissemination
- Budget justification
