About

Dr. Karahan received her BA and MA degrees from Bogazici University in management and economics, respectively. She earned her Ph.D. degree in economics in 2006 at Syracuse University, where she also conducted research for the Center for Policy Research. After returning to Turkey, she served as an advisor at the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBITAK) and taught part-time at several universities. She joined Istanbul Medipol University in 2015 as the Founding Head of the Department of Economics and Finance. Karahan served as a consultant for leading business associations in Turkey, including Turkish Exporters' Assembly (TIM) and Foreign Economic Relations Board of Turkey (DEIK). She has also worked as a senior economic advisor at the Turkish Presidency. In 2020, she was awarded Professor of Economics.During the 2021-2022 academic year, she was a visiting scholar at Harvard University. She is currently a visiting scholar in the Center for Development Economics and Policy at Columbia University's SIPA.

Current Work

Prof. Karahan's research interests include macroeconomics, development, energy, women's studies and labor economics. Her last book, "The Quest for a New International Aid Architecture", has been published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2020. Besides her interest in development cooperation, her research also focuses on the various aspects of development in developing countries, particularly in Turkey. Karahan also conducts studies on women's status in labor markets. Her latest article titled "The Silent Discrimination against Headscarved Professionals in the Turkish Labor Market: The Case of Women in the Banking Sector" has been published in 2021 in Sustainability.
