General Information

Where other programs stand freely, offering degrees only in American Indian Studies, NAS at Michigan works in close concert with units and disciplines in the Department of American Culture to provide a comprehensive, interdisciplinary education. NAS faculty and students work across traditional disciplinary lines to explore varieties of the Native American experience and the centrality of Indians to American history, literature, religion, politics, law, economics, and so forth.

Our training promotes problem-solving and communication skills that allow proposing and accomplishing changes and innovation. It promotes an open, objective intellectual approach to knowledge, supporting the qualities necessary to confront new situations in our complex world. Students who wish to concentrate in NAS may do so informally through their course selections while pursuing a major in American Culture.
