Graduate and undergraduate students will be guided by faculty with deep methodic training and experience in German and Comparative Literature, History, Political Science, Film Studies, Linguistics, Sociology, Philosophy, Business, and Music. Many of our faculty have joint appointments in corresponding departments—they are interdisciplinarians.

Our courses are wide-ranging, challenging, and just plain fun! Descriptions of each language program are available here.

The Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures sponsors an annual event for secondary school students of German in southeastern Michigan, German Day. This event plays a major role in promoting the study of German in Michigan and attracts over 1,000 students, parents and teachers to take part in German language competitions. These include contests in speaking, acting, musical performances, poetry recitation, video production and website creation. For more information, see the website.
