Lauren Lee McCarthy is an artist examining social relationships in the midst of surveillance, automation, and algorithmic living. Her practice – spanning performance, software, electronics, internet, film, photography, installation – investigates what it means to be truly present in the midst of always-on networked interfaces. She is also the creator of p5.js, an open-source creative coding platform that prioritizes inclusion and access.

Sponsored by The DISCO Network, housed within the Digital Studies Institute, has launched "Search Engines: Art, Tech, Justice." Backed by the University of Michigan Arts Initiative, this project aims to address digital inequalities by bringing artists to campus who use new media to critique social injustices and to start conversations centered around the intersection of art practice, emerging technology, and social justice. Search Engines seeks to engage diverse university communities who might not otherwise be reached by campus arts programming, including students from science and engineering backgrounds.
