MITRE

Welcome to the Michigan Institute for Teaching and Research in Economics (MITRE)!

MITRE is the exciting intellectual hub of the Department of Economics.  Established in 2012 by a gift from a generous alumnus, MITRE promotes instructional excellence and research accomplishments for economics faculty and students at the University of Michigan.

In the Department of Economics, our research and teaching cover a broad range of fields, including development economics, econometrics, economic history, industrial organization, international finance and trade, labor economics, macroeconomics, microeconomic theory, natural resource and energy economics, and public economics. MITRE provides resources for our faculty and students to conduct leading-edge research and to incorporate this knowledge into classroom instruction and research-based student learning experiences.

To be an international leader in state‐of‐the‐art economic research in applied, theoretical, and methodological fields, you need to recruit, retain, train and place excellent researchers and teachers. Providing a collaborative and intellectually stimulating environment filled with access to abundant research resources and support, ample opportunities for funding ambitious ideas, and eager and inquisitive students is what top‐tier institutions do to draw rising stars and retain forefront researchers. With the commitment of the Dean, the pivotal support of MITRE and the generosity of our Economics Leadership Council and Department supporters, the University of Michigan has made strong advances in creating this type of environment for our faculty and students.

MITRE resources are directed to achieve the following Department goals:

  • Be an international leader in state-of-the-art economics research in applied, theoretical, and methodological fields.
  • Substantially improve the quality, research experience, and placement of graduate students.
  • Increase the Department's visibility and enhance its reputation.
  • Consolidate the position of the Department as one of the leading economics departments among universities.

The resources provided by MITRE have enhanced the quality of research and intellectual experiences for our faculty and students, focusing on three major areas of academic life in the Department:

  • Faculty Research and Professional Development
  • Doctoral Student Fellowships
  • Visiting Research Scholars

More information about each of these areas and their MITRE programming is available throughout this website. We invite you to explore MITRE and see how the Institute is shaping the academic experience for faculty and students in the Department of Economics!
