Evelyn O. Bychinsky Awards

Evelyn O. Bychinsky Award is given to undergraduate students who show promise in mathematics deserving of recognition and encouragement. Evelyn Bychinsky was a 1933 alumna of the University. She did not major in Mathematics but took many math courses and later taught math at Michigan State. She was a Certified Public Accountant and maintained an office in Ann Arbor for many years. The Bychinsky Awards were established through a bequest by Irene Bychinsky Bendler, sister of Evelyn Bychinsky.

Lois Zook Levy Award

Presented by Dr. Hiram Levy

A Memorial Award has been established in the Department of Mathematics in the name of Lois Zook Levy by her husband (Hiram) and sons (Joshua and Adam) to honor her memory, her lifelong love of mathematics and her commitment to education. The Award will be given annually to an outstanding graduating mathematics student who plans to teach mathematics at the K-12 level. It is intended to recognize Lois’s love of the University of Michigan and teaching and to emphasize the importance of developing knowledgeable and dedicated teachers of K-12 mathematics. Along with her immediate family, more than 50 friends, family and associates have contributed to the Award’s endowment.

William LeVeque Award in Number Theory

Presented by Professor Sarah Koch

The William LeVeque Award is given to an undergraduate who excels in the study of number theory. William J. LeVeque was a Professor in Mathematics and served as Chair of the Mathematics Department from 1967-70. He later moved on to become the Executive Director of the American Mathematical Society until his retirement from that post around 1990. This award is in recognition of his contributions to number theory.

The Wirt and Mary Cornwell Prize in Mathematics

Presented by Professor Mel Hochster

The Wirt and Mary Cornwell Prize in Mathematics was established to be awarded to “a student at the University of Michigan who, during the previous four years, shall have demonstrated the greatest intellectual curiosity and given the most promise of original study and creative work in Mathematics".
