New England Literature Program

Education looks different at NELP... For six and a half weeks, 40 students and 13 UM instructors live and work together closely, reading New England authors, writing, and exploring the New England countryside, its people, culture, and history.

NELP students on their way up Mt. Washington We start with a small mountain in Week One of NELP, and we work our way up to hiking the tallest peak in the northeast by the end of the program.

Living the rustic life We live at NELP for 45 days in the woods, in simple cabins along a lake, with no cell phones, computers, recorded music or other things that tend to take up a lot of our time in Ann Arbor. So we build fires, write letters, make our own music, read a lot of books, and bake a lot of cookies...

Explore the world All University of Michigan students are eligible to apply for NELP. You certainly don't need to be an English concentrator--NELP students come from across the University and from many different disciplines.
