Food

Korean food, or Hansik (pronounced Hahn-sheek), has been an essential component of Korean culture for millenia. Korean food today includes traditions that date back hundreds or thousands of years, ingredients that have come to Korea more recently through trade and war, and constant innovations both in Korea and in Korean communities abroad. While the centrality of food to Korean culture is easy to see, the political aspects of who eats what food and how food is talked about are more subtle. This module investigates the origins, uses, production, and consumption of Korean foods to gain a better understanding of Korea’s history and its place in the 21st century world.
