 Horizons Undergraduate Research Intern Program

Research experiences for undergraduates can be transformative. They help students determine whether research is something they wish to pursue.  Research experience is essential for entering many graduate programs, medical school, and other biology careers.  Many students, however, may have no idea what research is about or may feel they cannot pursue such opportunities because they need to earn money during the summer. The Horizons Program is dedicated to expanding opportunities for such students by encouraging them to consider research and paying a stipend to support their summer work.

The Excitement of Scientific Discovery

Our professors and researchers are pushing the boundaries of scientific knowledge, and our students are experiencing the excitement of scientific discovery through their coursework, and through hands-on experience in our research laboratories. Our mission at MCDB:

  • conduct cutting edge research in molecular life sciences
  • provide exceptional training for undergraduates, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows for careers in the life sciences
  • serve as a resource of expert knowledge that can be applied to society’s most pressing challenges.

Your gifts provide:

• seed funding for MCDB faculty to initiate new research projects to help them compete for external funding in exciting new areas of biological research

• scholarships for undergraduate students to conduct research in MCDB laboratories

• support for departmental activities that promote community and collaboration.

We are committed to the highest quality and standards of undergraduate and graduate education, and we are dedicated to helping students develop skills applicable to a wide range of careers in the sciences, health care, business, government, and education.

Christine Psujek Memorial Undergraduate Award Fund

Chris Psujek helped over 15,000 students during her time in biology with her knowledge, compassion, and patience – a truly incredible legacy. Undergraduates will remember her for her ability to answer just about any question that was thrown at her and graduate students will remember her from the fair and organized way she managed GSI assignments. The faculty relied on her extensively in their role as concentration advisors as well as all administrative aspects of their undergraduate teaching. In her memory, the Program in Biology has established the Christine Psujek Memorial Undergraduate Award. An award will be presented annually to the graduating senior who submits the best honors thesis in any of the biology majors. Pay online or by check-- add Christine Psujek Memorial Undergraduate Award Fund - 317374 in the memo space.
