MCDB is committed to provide an inclusive and supportive campus environment for all members of the Michigan community, irrespective of gender, ethnicity, background, or socio-economic status.
As a department, we strive to explicitly address issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Towards this goal, we have appointed a faculty DEI Officer who acts as a liaison with the graduate student-led MCDB DEI Committee. We collectively organize monthly lunches, workshops, and panels to address issues of departmental/campus climate, student retention, and professional development.
As a department, we participate in promoting the next generation of biologists through programs such as:
- UM President’s Postdoctoral Fellowship program
- LSA Collegiate Postdoctoral Fellowship program
- LSA NextProf Science Workshop
MCDB participates in national conferences (SACNAS and ABRCMS), engages minority-serving institutions, and organizes an annual Graduate Program Preview event to recruit a consistently diverse and talented applicant pool for graduate study.
In total, we pursue a DEI mission to advance MCDB by promoting diversity and inclusivity.
