About
Jake Hooker is a writer, director, projection designer, educator and Co-Director of A Host of People, a Detroit-based transdisciplinary devised theater company. Prior to moving to Detroit, Hooker created many theatrical pieces in New York City, where he lived from 2001-2012. In New York, his work has been seen at HERE, Dixon Place, The Chocolate Factory, La Mama, The Bushwick Starr, The Ohio Theater, and many other venues. He was the Company Manager and Assistant Director for Big Dance Theatre, as the recipient of a 2005-2007 TCG New Generations Grant. He is also a proud Associate Artist with Target Margin Theater. In Detroit, his work has been seen at ArtlabJ, Detroit Contemporary, Play House, the Jam Handy, Light Box and the Sidewalk Festival, as well as in many found spaces, both public and private. He holds a BFA in Original Works from Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, an MA in Performance Studies from the University of Wales and an MPhil in Theories of Theatre from the City University of New York where he recently successfully defended his PhD dissertation on Contemporary Performance Practice, Detroit, and the Postindustrial City.
