Last week, Science published an article on the controversy surrounding the publication of images of funerary objects as it plays out among members of the Southeastern Archaeological Conference, or SEAC. A few years ago, UMMAA curator Rob Beck, as editor of the journal Southeastern Archaeology, helped develop a policy that limited the publication of photographs of funerary objects, out of respect for Indigenous people--but this policy too has caused controversy. Both sides will present arguments on Friday, October 27, at the SEAC annual meeting, and a vote will be held in November.
