ANN ARBOR, MI – April 24, 2024 – The University of Michigan's Department of Sociology is proud to announce that Professor Alexandra (Sasha) Killewald has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, one of the nation’s most prestigious honorary societies and leading independent research centers connecting leaders across multiple disciplines. 

Professor Killewald's election recognizes her sociological contributions to the study of inequality in the contemporary United States. Killewald's research focuses on gender, family, and workplace relations built upon demographic and other quantitative analytical techniques. Her work addresses social demography, the sociology of the family, and the sociology of inequality. It has been published in the most prestigious journals in demography and the discipline more generally, including the American Sociological Review, the American Journal of Sociology, Demography, and the Annual Review of Sociology.

"Sasha is not only a superlative scholar who has already garnered strong national recognition for her work, but also a gifted teacher and mentor and model citizen to the University of Michigan and the wider academic community.”  A product of the University of Michigan, Killewald earned her Bachelor of Science in mathematics, economics, and French, receiving highest distinction & high honors in economics. She received two Masters Degrees from U-M, one in sociology and one in statistics, and then her Ph.D. from Michigan’s joint program in Public Policy & Sociology.

Joining a select group of individuals in the arts and sciences, membership in the Academy is offered to leaders in arts & humanities, democracy & justice, education, energy & environment, global affairs, and science & technology. Killewald is the eighth U-M Sociology faculty member to be elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences; and the first woman from U-M sociology to receive this recognition.
