Featured Scholar in the Field
Encarnación Lemus, former Romance Languages and Literatures professor, has been awarded Spain's Premio Nacional de Historia for her book, Ellas. Las estudiantes de la Residencia de Señoritas. The book details the experience of the first generation of professional women in Spain - scientists, doctors, lawyers, high school teachers, journalists - and the writers and artists who were also part of the Silver Age. It explains the path by which they managed to achieve their ambitions and how the Civil War cut short this experience of social modernization. It also recounts the final transfer of some of them to the Spanish departments of North American Universities.
Reminiscing about her time with RLL, Encarnación says "I am very proud to have been part of the Romance Languages [Department] which I remember with some nostalgia."

Translocas: The Politics of Puerto Rican Drag and Trans Performance, by Larry La Fountain Stokes, is the winner of the 2023 U-M Press Book Award. Larry is a Professor of Romance Languages and Literatures, Women and Gender Studies, and Chair of the American Cultures Department. Read more about the award here.
