About
Mike Shriberg’s (MS ’00, PhD ’02) work focuses on water issues in the Great Lakes, local and state energy policy, campus sustainability/carbon neutrality and environmental leadership. Prior to coming to SEAS, he was the Great Lakes regional executive director at the National Wildlife Federation. Major initiatives included leading advocacy for federal Great Lakes restoration efforts; ensuring water affordability and access; preventing the introduction of aquatic invasive species; reforming Great Lakes water management; building resilience of the Great Lakes from climate change; combating environmental injustice in the region; and engaging urban youth in nature-based education and activities.
Shriberg’s academic expertise focuses on organizational change and leadership for sustainability. Prior to his time at the National Wildlife Federation, he served as the education director at the Graham Sustainability Institute and as a lecturer in the Program in the Environment and Earth & Environmental Sciences at U-M. Previously, Shriberg was the policy director at the Ecology Center and the director of Environment Michigan. He also previously served as the environmental studies program director and as an assistant professor at Chatham University.

Research
Dr. Shriberg’s research is interdisciplinary and practice-oriented, focused on analysis and application of how institutions and individuals can be trained and empowered as change agents. This includes exploring how environmental change happens within social structures and institutions, using higher education as a model. This foundational work for the field includes assessing higher education’s movement toward sustainability, including the influence of organizational culture. He also researches and practices sustainability leadership, focusing on assessing what leadership skills are most needed for addressing the “wicked problems” embedded in environmental advocacy, and how various leadership training programs and individual courses are matching these needs.
