Please join the Frankel Center for Judaic Studies in congratulating Marina Mayorski for being named the 2024 Marshall Weinberg Prize winner! This annual award provides a $9,000 prize to a graduate student demonstrating outstanding academic ability in Judaic Studies.
The Frankel Center wishes to commend Marina on the originality of your dissertation project, Guilty Pleasures: Popular Literature and the Formation of Jewish Cultural Modernity in Hebrew, Ladino, and Yiddish, and the significance of your contribution to Jewish studies. The selection committee was impressed with Marina's comparative work on modern Jewish culture, in which she uses the framework of translation and adaptation to provide a nuanced understanding of Jewish cultural modernity beyond the writings and debates of intellectual elites. Marina's professors have highlighted her innovative approach to Ladino texts as products of late Ottoman Jewish culture and as part of a broader transnational Jewish cultural moment. They also note her prolific work as a researcher and translator in multiple projects on our campus and beyond. At the Frankel Center, we are grateful for her active contributions to the graduate certificate program and the DEI committee. Marina also enriched our 2023-2024 Institute year through her exhibition and lecture at the Ottoman Jewish Culture Symposium.
