International Institute Student Fellowships

The International Institute Student Fellowships (IISF) are designed to support University of Michigan students, regardless of citizenship, who are enrolled in a degree program and wish to participate in internships or conduct research abroad.

Applicants are encouraged to visit the II Student Fellowships (IISF) Resource Page prior to beginning the application process.

The II Student Fellowships Application is the common application for several fellowships, including some from II centers. The IISF Application must be used to apply for any of the following awards:

Application Components

  • IISF Application form
  • one recommendation letter
  • statement of purpose
  • project expense sheet
  • resume or curriculum vitae
  • U-M transcript
  • letter of invitation or description of in country resources

Eligibility Criteria

  • U-M Ann Arbor student, regardless of citizenship, enrolled in a degree program.
  • Students graduating before the start of the project are not eligible
  • Student must return to campus for at least one term prior to graduation
  • All travel must follow current guidelines, which are detailed in the International Institute Travel Policy.

Reporting Requirements

Grantees will be required to provide a brief report outlining the experience within one month of their return to the United States. Grantees are also encouraged to write an article or submit photographs (or both) to be considered for publication in International Institute materials. Additional requirements may apply depending on award.

Advising

Advisors are available by appointment throughout the fall and winter semesters.  

  • RIRA applicants, please visit the Online Scheduler and select an open day/time for an "IISF Advising Appointment."  
  • Applicants for II center awards should contact the individual center for more information (see links above).

Selection Process

Applications will be evaluated based on the following criteria: feasibility, relevance to degree program, relevance to career goals, record of academic achievement, and overall quality of the application. The International Institute does not provide feedback to applicants on the quality of their proposals, nor provide applicants with evaluators' comments. Results expected to be announced by the end of April.
