Alumni Profiles

How does Michigan prepare its undergraduates for graduate school and beyond? Alumni share their stories here.

MAYURA BALAKRISHNAN

BS, Astronomy & Astrophysics, Physics

ANDREIA CARRILLO

BS, Michigan Astro '16 | PhD Student, University of Texas, Austin

SIERRA GRANT

BS, Michigan Astro '15 | PhD Student, Boston University

As an undergraduate, Sierra was involved in research with Professor Nuria Calvet on the evolution of circumstellar disks. She is currently studying protoplanetary disks and their evolution.

ANNA FERGUSON

B.S. Interdisciplinary Astronomy, B.A. Art & Design

DERYL LONG

BS, Astronomy & Astrophysics

DUNCAN CAMPBELL

BS, Michigan Astro  ’11 | PhD Student, Yale | Gruber Science Fellowship

Duncan did his undergraduate research on black-hole feedback, and is now studying how a cluster’s environment affects the evolution of its constituent galaxies.

KARISSA GAWRONSKI

BS, Neuroscience; Interdisciplinary Astronomy (minor) '18

MARY HOLT

BS, Astrophysics, Michigan Astro '13

WILLIAM WAALKES

BS, Astronomy & Astrophysics and Physics '16

Will changed from pre-med to astrophysics when he discovered a passion for using physics to unravel the natural world. He's interested in exoplanets, and his research has included atmospheric modeling of Saturn's largest moon and spectroscopic analysis of the state of Nitrogen in nearby nebulae.

"The best thing about this department is getting to work with world-class researchers doing cutting-edge science."

—William Waalkes
