Undergraduate Students

If you have any questions regarding courses or the undergraduate program, please email alc-advising@umich.edu

The Department offers instruction in the languages, literatures, linguistics and cultures of China, Japan, Korea, Tibet, South Asia and Southeast Asia. With a major in Asian Studies, students can acquire a strong foundation in both Asian languages and cultures. Through classes with the department’s superb team of language instructors, students have the opportunity to gain high-level proficiency in vital Asian languages. Culture classes, taught by internationally renowned scholars, give students the tools to communicate effectively with people from other cultures, an increasingly critical skill.

Students interested in complementing another degree program by gaining advanced-level proficiency in an Asian language have the opportunity to do so through the Asian Languages and Cultures minor. Students who do not wish to study an Asian language can still develop their understanding of Asian cultures, history, religion, and literature through the Asian Studies minor.

Undergraduate students are encouraged to consult departmental advisors about declaring the major or one of the minors offered by the department and developing a plan of study, as well as about appropriate electives and introducing an Asian component into a major focused in another department.
