PitE supports students seeking out opportunities to enhance their education, such as doing independent research or completing other academic endeavors that support their educational goals. Students can apply for funding any time during the academic year. Funds are disbursed on a monthly basis.
Students must be a declared PitE major or PitE minor in good academic standing in their school or college.
Academic Enrichment Funds are not awarded to students who:
· Have received individual academic enrichment funding from PitE in thepast,
· Have also received or benefited directly from PitE Student Group funding in the same year, or
· Intend to use these funds towards U-M tuition or the Practical Experience requirement for PitE
Important to Note! A PitE student is not eligible to receive both individual academic enrichment funding AND student group funding in the same academic year. In other words, if a student receives funding through student group funding, they are not eligible to receive individual academic enrichment funding in the same academic year. Students who are interested in planning to do multiple experiences must carefully consider which funds they would like to receive in a given year. How Can These Funds Be Used?
This funding can be used to offset the following expenses (this is not an exhaustive list):
· Conference registration or fees
· Transportation costs (e.g. gas money, airfare)
· Housing or lodging
· Research expenses (e.g. books, or equipment rental costs)
Additional Award Criteria
The following factors are also considered when awarding individual academic enrichment funding:
1. How well this experience relates to and enhances the student’s PitE
education and relates to his/her academic interests,
2. Cumulative GPA and class standing, and
3. Involvement in extra-curricular activities or campus initiatives
When To Apply
Plan Ahead! Requests are accepted all year round, but are limited and are awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis. Applications are reviewed once a month, so it might be couple weeks before you are notified. Students should apply for funds at least 6 weeks prior to needing the funds to accommodate the time needed for processing.
After Funds Are Received
A month after the experience, the student will follow up with PitE by sending a brief 500-word write up and 2-3 pictures of him/her on the experience. The write up should include a brief summary, what the student enjoyed most, and how the student benefited from this experience. These materials should be send to the advisor in PitE who administers scholarships.
Information Needed When Applying For Funding
Students must submit their request for funding by completing an application on the PitE website. Students are asked to provide the following information:
· 1-2 sentence description about the research or planned experience
· 1-paragraph statement about how this experience will help the student meet
his/her academic goals
· The student’s unmet need: the single dollar amount needed to participate
in the activity/event
· Budget outlining anticipated expenses and current plans to cover these expenses
