Instruments

NMR data in the spectrometers can be accessed directly from the lab's workstations for off-line processing an plotting.  User's data can also be downloaded via sftp but only from within the Chemistry Department and a few selected University locations.

Varian Vnmrs 700 (Ytterbium)

  • 700 MHz (17.6 Tesla) Premium Shielded Magnet.
  • One high band and two low band radio frequency channels; 14 bit 80 MHz ADC provides effective 20 bit dynamic range at 10kHz spectral width.
  • Antivibration legs system.
  • Waveform generator in all channels for shaped pulses.
  • Temperature range: -150° to 150° C (see below for probe specs).
  • Pulsed Field Gradient (62 G/cm).
  • Dual Channel ProTune module.
  • Variable temperature preconditioning unit controls temperature from -40° to +100° C.Typically used for long term experiments, H/C/X triple resonance experiments and biomolecular experiments.
  • Installed March 2011.

  • Frequency range: H1 / N15-P31
  • Temperature range: -80° to +130° 
  • CSensitivity: H1=620, C13=445, P31=250, N15=50

Varian 5 mm PFG H{C/N} Triple Resonance AutoX Probe
  • Frequency range: H1 {C13/N15}
  • Temperature range: -20° to +80° C
  • Sensitivity: H1=1720, C13=210
  • Other features: auto tunable (proton channel only)

Varian vnmrs 500 (Tellurium)

Varian MR400 (Gallium)

  • 400 MHz (9.4 Tesla) Premium Shielded Magnet.
  • Two radio frequency channels.
  • Antivibration legs system.
  • Waveform generator for shaped pulses.
  • Temperature range: -150° to 150° C (see below for probe specs).
  • Pulsed Field Gradient (21 G/cm) .
  • Dual Channel ProTune module.
  • Typically used for routine analysis and long term acquisitions. Can detect H1, F19, C13, P31, B11 and other heteronuclei.
  • Installed: Feb 2008.

Varian MR400 (Cobalt)

  • 400 MHz (9.4 Tesla) Premium Shielded Magnet.
  • Two radio frequency channels.

  • Waveform generator for shaped pulses.
  • Temperature range: -150° to 150° C (see below for probe specs).
  • Pulsed Field Gradient (21 G/cm).
  • Dual Channel ProTune module.
  • Walk-up instrument (no reservations required). Typically used for quick, routine analyses. Can detect only H1, F19, C13 and P31. No tuning required.
  • Installed: Feb 2008.
Varian autoswitchable probe (quad, default)
  • Frequency range: H1/F19/C13/P31
  • Temperature range: -20° to +80° C
  • Sensitivity: H1=234, C13=142, F19=311, P31=102
  • Lineshape:  0.29, 2.23, 4.47.
  • Other features: Z-gradient, 5 mm; no tuning required.

Varian Inova 500 (Tin)

  • 500 MHz (11.7 Tesla) Oxford Magnet.
  • Two radio frequency channels.
  • TMC antivibration system.
  • Waveform generator for shaped pulses.
  • Performa I, Z-axis pulsed field gradient module and automatic gradient shimming module.
  • Enhanced VT unit with high-stability option and pre-conditioning unit.
  • Typically used for high field proton and heteronuclear spectra and indirect detection 2D techniques.
Varian indirect detection probe (id, default)
  • Frequency range: H1{N15-P31}
  • Temperature range: -20° to +50°C
  • Sensitivity: (5/15/06): H1=560, C13=45
  • Other features:  Z-gradient, 5 mm
Varian switchable probe (sw)
  • Frequency range: H1-F19/N15-P31

Varian Mercury 200 (Scandium)

  • 200 MHz (4.7 Tesla) "R2D2" Magnet.

  • SMS 100 Automatic sample changer.
  • Located in room A636-A.
  • Used for undergraduate teaching.

Data stations

Five Hewlett-Packard Z420 computers, 3.6 GHz with Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Vnmrj 4.2. A licensed copy of MestReNova is available in one of the workstations.

SQUID MPMS magnetometer

The SQUID (Superconducting QUantum Interference Device) is located in Chemistry Room 3411c.   This system is known as a MPMS (Magnetic Property Measurement System), with a SQUID detector.   Manufactured by Quantum Design

The DC magnetic field can be run from: -55,000 to 55,000 Gauss (-5.5 to 5.5 Tesla).
The sample temperature can be run from: 1.7 to 400 Kelvin (°K) (-271.6 to 126.7 °C).
