Sexual orientation

Correct! Thanks to Toy and other LGBTQ+ advocates, sexual orientation became a protected category in U-M’s non-discrimination bylaws in 1993—the other two categories were added as amendments in 2007.

Jim Toy, who was said to be the first openly gay man in the state of Michigan, passed away on January 1 at 91 years old. Read more about his incredible impact on the university or his many, many firsts for the LGBTQ+ community.
