Michael Gould has been named the recipient of the 2023 Harold Haugh Award for excellence in studio teaching.
Founded in 1975 in honor of Harold Haugh, professor of music and leading oratorio soloist, the award is presented annually by SMTD to a faculty member in the departments of composition, jazz & contemporary improvisation, organ, piano, strings, voice, or winds & percussion. As specified in the award guidelines, Gould will present a recital and lecture during the fall 2023 term.
In congratulating him for this honor, David Gier, dean of SMTD and Paul Boylan Collegiate Professor of Music, described Mike as “a standout member of our studio teaching faculty with an extraordinary record of student success.”
Gould is a Professor of Music at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan in the Jazz and Contemporary Improvisation Department in the School of Music, Theater & Dance and the Residential College (College of Literature, Science and the Arts). He has received international recognition as a performer and scholar in the field of drumset, contemporary percussion performance and pedagogy, and has performed and given clinics all over the world.
Gould is the Director of the Center for World Perfomance Studies (CWPS). Established in 2000, CWPS works to offer a multidisciplinary space for artists, performers, scholars, and the community for intellectual interactions and public performances.
The music director for Tangente Dance Company in Berlin, Germany and a member of the Board of Advisors for the Percussive Arts Society, Gould's latest piece Remember Me was performed at the Kunsthaus Dahlem in Berlin, Germany and includes dance, theater, percussion, electronics, and original artwork. The work has been published by Alternative Press, Ann Arbor, MI.
Recently, Gould collaborated with Henry Pollack (the co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize) on an art installation piece entitled "A World Without Ice". The piece focuses on both poles and addresses issues of climate change. For more information see: www.gouldmusic.com.
