Round Table Discussion. New Media Strategies for Music Distribution: The Pros and Cons of Giving Music Away for Free

This roundtable discussion tackles a series of concerns facing musicians, composers, and producers in the 21st century. First and foremost, it considers how innovative technologies and continually evolving social networks have changed the international field of music production and distribution, while simultaneously shifting audience expectations and attitudes concerning music consumption. Secondly, it engages one of the fundamental questions any modern musician must ask – should I give my music away for free? This panel contrasts some of the personal and professional pros and cons related to this decision, particularly by drawing on the insights and experiences of local indie label director Jeremy Peters (Ghostly International –, and non-commercial Chilean netlabel directors and artists in residence, Mika Martini ( and Pablo Flores ( Finally, as a key issue indelibly tied to all these concerns, this panel will also address questions related to intellectual property rights, with special consideration given to Creative Commons licensing platforms as an alternative to traditional copyright protections. This roundtable will conclude with an opportunity for audience questions and comments, with the hope of stirring a lively conversation.
