About
Joanne Motino Bailey is director of the Nurse-Midwives as well as a Collegiate Lecturer in the Department of Women’s Studies. She completed a Bachelors of Arts degree in Japanese Language and Literature and was a health care volunteer in Honduras before returning to the University of Michigan for a second career nursing degree and completion of the Nurse-Midwifery and Family Nurse Practitioner master’s programs and a PhD in Nursing with a focus on women’s health. Her dissertation work explored the role of perceived racism and discrimination in cervical cancer risk. Her past research has included work on reducing postpartum hemorrhage and improving maternity care in Honduras. Her current research interests include waterbirth and other midwifery practices in the hospital setting. She has been director of the Nurse-Midwives for over 17 years and her teaching includes a large survey course “Perspectives in Women’s Health”.
