The School of Nursing recently announced the appointment of Dr. Lisa Kane Low to the position of Associate Dean for Practice and Professional Graduate Studies effective September 1, 2015.  Dr. Kane Low is an Associate Professor in the Department of Health Behavior and Biological Science in the School of Nursing and has a joint appointment in Women’s and Gender Studies.  She teaches WGS/Nurs 220 Perspectives in Women’s Health and has supported women’s studies students completing their honor’s thesis projects and has lead service learning field experiences in Honduras and Detroit.

Dr. Kane Low’s research interests include evidence based labor care practices during childbirth for which she has had 18 funded research grants.  Additionally Dr. Kane Low has had 9 grants focused on education and service learning as well as 12 funded service projects.  She is well known nationally for expertise as a practicing midwife, an educator, and scientist.  She services on numerous peer review panels for research journals and two journal editorial boards.  Her contribution to student education is stellar serving on over 30 nursing master’s thesis projects and 25 UROP and Honor’s Thesis experiences for undergraduate students.  She has worked with 17 doctoral students and 4 international doctoral students on various projects.  She has made over 140 national and international presentations, published over 47 manuscripts and additional book chapters.

Dr. Kane Low received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Michigan in 1984 and the Master of Science, Nurse Midwifery from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1987.  Returning to the University of Michigan in 1996, Dr. Kane Low completed a graduate certificate in Women’s and Gender Studies in 1999 and the PhD in 2001.  She did a post-doctoral fellowship through the Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women’s Health [BIRCWH] mechanism from 2001-2003 in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Institute for Research on Women and Gender.   Dr. Kane Low has current and past experience in practice as a staff nurse, midwife, and Director of Midwifery Services at Detroit Medical Center [1987-1993].  She is President-Elect of the American College of Nurse Midwives and will assume office as President in May, 2016.  The Women’s and Gender Studies Department congratulates Dr. Kane Low on her new position.
