Transfer Students

We welcome transfer students to pursue a major in Cognitive Science! Each transfer student’s journey is unique, and we are here to help you navigate yours. Please contact Weinberg-Institute@umich.edu if you’d like to connect with a CogSci advisor about your transfer journey.

Will my courses transfer?

Navigating transfer credit can be overwhelming! Credit that transfers into U-M will help you make progress toward your degree in up to four ways:

  1. Counting toward the up to 60 transfer credits allowed toward the 120 credits required for an LSA degree.

  2. Counting toward #1 and fulfilling an LSA General Degree requirement

  3. Counting toward #1 and fulfilling a CogSci major requirement

  4. In rare cases, one class may count towards all of the above!

How do I know if my credit will fulfill major requirements?

Check the Transfer Credit Equivalency (TCE) website to see if classes have already been approved for transfer to the University of Michigan.

If a class is listed on the TCE website as transferring as a specific course number (i.e., PSYCH 240) and that course number is listed on a Cognitive Science curriculum list, no further action is needed. This class will count as part of the Cognitive Science curriculum.

Otherwise, please submit a transfer course petition to have the class evaluated. You will need to do this if:

  • The class is listed on the TCE website as transferring as departmental credit (i.e., PSYCH DEPT)

  • The class is listed on the TCE website as transferring as a specific course number (i.e., PSYCH 290) but that course number is not listed on a Cognitive Science curriculum list

  • The class is not listed at all on the TCE. (This means that no student has ever submitted it for evaluation and you’re a trailblazer!)
