Spring/Summer 2020 Advising and COVID-19

The turbulent Winter 2020 semester is coming to a close, and the Spring/Summer 2020 terms are upon us! We wanted to make sure you know how and when you can reach CogSci advisors over the summer months, especially as your Summer and Fall plans begin to take shape. Here are some helpful links and information that will help you stay in touch with us all summer:

Contacting the Weinberg Institute and Advising

During the SP/SU terms, staff advisors will be available virtually on a limited basis. To see and sign-up for available appointments, please consult the advising calendar. If the times posted don’t fit your schedule, you can always request an advising appointment by emailing Weinberg-Insitute@umich.edu. All other inquiries should also be directed to Weinberg-Insitute@umich.edu or by calling us at 734.615.3275 (please note all phone calls will be forwarded to a voicemail, which we are regularly monitoring). Please be sure to provide your name, uniqname, and a phone number or email where we can reach you. We will generally respond to emails and phone calls within 1-3 business days.

Winter 2020 Grades

If you need further clarification about grade conversion for WN 2020 grades, the LSA Newnan Advising Office has created both a webpage as well as a Grade Conversion Tips guide that may be of assistance. If you need further assistance in this process, you may contact a Newnan advisor for help.

Course Petitions

As registration for SP/SU/Fall is ongoing, you may want to submit course petitions while building your schedule. You may submit both U-M Course and External Course petitions via the submission forms on our course petition page. Course petitions submitted in summer generally take 10-15 business days to process, but pending staff availability, they may take longer. We appreciate your patience!

Study Abroad

For students who had been planning for Fall 2020 departure, please be sure to regularly follow up with the Center for Global and Intercultural Study for any COVID-19 related developments. In the meantime, students planning for a WN 2021 experience can learn more about CogSci and Study Abroad opportunities here. This page includes our table of Previously Petitioned Courses as well as our Study Abroad course petition form. Course petitions submitted in summer generally take 10-15 business days to process, but pending staff availability, they may take longer. We appreciate your patience! Please be sure to also review the application process for CGIS programs here

Honors

Any students who are interested in using the summer period to initiate an Honors thesis should review the Honors procedures and timeline page here. Once you have secured a thesis advisor and topic, you may submit your application on the link provided on the aforementioned webpage. The deadline to submit an Honors application is September 1, 2020. However, we encourage students to submit an application as soon as they are able.**If there are any changes to this process issued by the Honors college, especially due to temporary pauses on human subjects and laboratory research, we will post all updates on our Honors page.**
