Microaggressions are statements, actions, or incidents that involve indirect, subtle, intentional or unintentional discrimination against members of a minoritized group (racial, ethnic or religious minorities, LGBTQ folks, older people, people with disabilities, etc.). Many studies have found that microaggressions have a significant negative impact on people’s mental and physical health over time and result in a sense of not belonging on campus (this is one of the chief reasons students fail to complete their academic journeys). In this introductory workshop, you’ll get a chance to learn several strategies for responding to microaggressions (including offensive jokes). This workshop will be facilitated by nationally-recognized dialogue facilitator, Libby Roderick, Director of Difficult Dialogues from the University of Alaska, and member of DDNRC.
- Audience: U-M only (students, faculty and staff)
- Level: Introductory
- Facilitator(s): Libby Roderick
