What UROP Program(s) were you a part of?

2015-2016 UROP as a Freshman, Health Sciences discipline

What made you choose UROP?

I was really interested in research, I was desperate to get into the program during my freshman year because I was so excited to begin doing something I was interested in right away. It provided me wonderful opportunities.

What do you think you have learned from your UROP experience?

It taught me to be a scientist. How to properly work in a laboratory setting. I learned how to converse with professors and network your way between labs.

What is the extent to which you have kept in contact with your Research Mentor?

Emails every now and then, mostly for recommendations.

How did your UROP experience shape or inform the next steps you took in your academic and professional journey?

Instead of pursuing a career/degree somewhere I knew I wouldnt be happy, I got involved with a lab which collectively mentored me and taught me many things. [UROP] helped me uncover my interests and guided me through decided where and when to apply to a PhD program, something I knew I was more interested in pursuing.

Where are you in your professional journey?

First year PhD Student

What advice would you give to a current UROP student?

You get what you put in. Don't just pick any lab really treat the interviews as you interviewing the professor too. The lab you pick can make or break your experience. You can learn to love research but if the dynamics are off you won't.
