Desire to gain research experience in anticipation of attending dental or medical school at the time

What do you think you have learned from your UROP experience?

Work ethic, time management with an already rigorous schedule, greater understanding of lab research

What is the extent to which you have kept in contact with your Research Mentor?

Have not kept contact since undergrad.

How did your UROP experience shape or inform the next steps you took in your academic and professional journey?

I felt my experience gave me a strong scientific background for my major Brain, Behavior and Cognitive Science that transferred to my career as a pediatric dentist for understanding for in depth the brain’s functional ability under stress.

Where are you in your professional journey?

I attended the University of Michigan Dental School then completed my pediatric dentistry residency at UPenn. I currently own my pediatric dentistry practice in Grand Rapids called Pediatric Dental Specialists of Grand Rapids. I felt that my experience in UROP was so valuable in helping me prepare and be eligible to attend an excellent dental school and residency. I even discussed my research at many interviews for school. I was happy I found a project during UROP that fit with my skills and future goals.

What advice would you give to a current UROP student?

The research you are doing is an incredible amount of work in addition to your already very rigorous studies. Find a project you are passionate about and feel proud of and keep reminding yourself that your hard work will make a difference in your goals and career!

What are some recent publications or accomplishments that you are proud of?

Achieving my ultimate dream of starting my own successful pediatric dentistry practice.
