What years did you participate in UROP?

2015-2016

What UROP Program(s) were you a part of?

UROP in Residence (MRADS)

What made you choose UROP?

I did undergraduate-level research during high school and wanted to continue doing so while also using it to learn more about engineering in a more practical, hands-on way than I was able to during class.

What do you think you have learned from your UROP experience?

I learned technical, practical skills during my research and also learned how to conduct myself in a professional and technical setting for the first time in my life. It showed me the amazing, complex problems I could one day solve with an engineering degree and how rewarding that work is.

How did your UROP experience shape or inform the next steps you took in your academic and professional journey?

UROP definitely solidified for me that I wanted to pursue engineering/tech. I did computer science-related research and although my degree is in Industrial Engineering, I decided to continue pursuing a career in tech.

Where are you in your professional journey?

I am currently a Product Manager at Microsoft and I'm based in Seattle, WA. I am working on a brand-new, yet-to-be-released product combining cloud technology with Windows OS. I work every day to define, design, and manage a few specific feature areas for the new product while also participating in and leading 2 groups focused on women's empowerment and racial injustice here at Microsoft.

What advice would you give to a current UROP student?

Seek out the advice and insights from as many people as you can right now. Talk, network, and learn as much as you can from older students, grad students, professors, and anyone else. I found clarity and purpose in my career path mainly from hearing the very personal experiences from others as I got to know them!
