UMMAA at the SAAs

The University of Michigan’s Museum of Anthropological Archaeology made a fantastic showing at the Society for American Archaeology meeting at the Marriott Wardman Park hotel in Washington, DC, April 11-15. Twenty of our current students and faculty co-authored papers or posters.

Highlights from the conference include the symposium titled “The Human Odyssey in Earth’s High Mountains and Plateaus.” Curator Brian Stewart co-chaired the symposium, which included a paper by graduate student Yuchao Zhao and Brian Stewart. Research affiliate Lisa Young co-chaired another symposium, “Learning from Homol’ovi: Papers in Honor of E. Charles Adams and Richard C. Lange.” Curator John O’Shea was a discussant on a third symposium, “Investigations into Submerged Prehistory: Methodological Approaches, Recent Endeavors, and New Results,” which included a presentation by Ashley Lemke, recent U-M graduate and assistant professor of anthropology at the University of Texas-Arlington.

Undergraduate student Daniel Hansen presented his research on mortuary analysis and social identity in Oaxaca. Find out more about Hansen’s work in our most recent Student Research Spotlight. Other current UMMAA researchers presenting at the conference included Anna Antoniou, Lacey Carpenter, Jordan Dalton, Bree Doering, Tim Everhart, Chelsea Fisher, Michael Galaty, Elspeth Geiger, Martin Menz, Jo Osborn, Györgyi Parditka, Lauren Pratt, Christina Sampson, Ashley Schubert, Kimberly Swisher, and James Torpy.

On Friday night, UMMAA welcomed friends and colleagues to the mezzanine foyer of the conference hotel for food and drinks. Thank you to all who attended and made this event a success.
