In March 2020, University of Michigan Museum of Anthropological Archaeology curator Brian Stewart, graduate student Yuchao Zhao, and their colleagues published their study on late Middle Stone Age ostrich eggshell bead trading in South Africa. The article, which appeared in PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences), was picked up by several news outlets. All the stories featured images of the beads created by the Museum’s illustrator, John Klausmeyer.

On Monday, July 13, The Scientist published an in-depth article on the study, including comments by major figures in the field. Read the article here.
