A new PBS segment for the program Overview focuses on UMMAA curator Rob Beck’s ongoing magnetometer survey at Cahokia, the largest Mississippian site north of the Valley of Mexico. The video is online now and will be broadcast in early 2025. Watch it here: https://www.pbs.org/video/what-happened-to-americas-first-megacity-yemsv8/
Beck’s NSF-funded project at Cahokia—co-directed with Ed Henry (Colorado State), Tim Horsley (Horsley Archaeological Prospection), and U-M alum Casey Barrier (Bryn Mawr)—has resulted to date in more than 4 sq km of magnetometer survey within the boundaries of the modern state park. It is now the most extensive geophysical work undertaken in the Western hemisphere.
