Cerro Azul was one of many key sites in a polity known as the "Kingdom of Huarco" in Peru's Cañete Valley. This region was known for its fierce resistance to the Inca invasion--a resistance that left its mark on the archaeological record. Joyce Marcus, curator at UMMAA, directed several seasons of excavation at Cerro Azul, exposing structures from the Inca era and residences, middens, and burials from the Late Intermediate period.
