Climate Change in the Great Lakes Region
The Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Program at UMBS (NSF #1659338) offers undergraduate students a rare opportunity to design, conduct, analyze, and present their own mentored research addressing some aspect of the program theme, “Climate Change in the Great Lakes Region”. In our program, students are involved with all phases of their research project, from hypothesis formulation and experimental design to data gathering, analysis, and interpretation, concluding with both written and oral communication of their scientific findings. Our students feel like researchers rather than research assistants.
Each student receives extensive hands-on mentoring from a research committee consisting of an established UMBS researcher as the primary mentor and the two program co-directors, Dave Karowe and Steve Bertman (a global change ecologist and an atmospheric chemist) to help provide an interdisciplinary perspective.
Students also benefit from additional “Perspective Broadening Activities”, including content and skill building workshops (on topics ranging from climate change and atmospheric processes to success in graduate school and career pathways), evening research seminars, a weekly reading/discussion group, and social events. As a consequence of all these shared experiences, our REU students develop a strong and lasting sense of belonging to a cohort of bright, dedicated, and thoughtful young scientists.
Duration: The REU program runs for nine weeks (June 19 - August 18, 2019).
Compensation: REU students receive a stipend of $5,000, $600 for travel expenses, $500 for research supplies, and full room and board at UMBS.
Eligibility: Applicants should have at least sophomore status in fall term 2019. Seniors with a graduation date before August usually are not eligible.
Participants also must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States. In keeping with the priorities of UMBS and NSF to diversify the academic workforce, students from underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply.
Deadline: Review of applications will begin on February 15 and will continue until all slots are filled.
