Course Description:
This course will introduce students to the fascinating world of fungi with an emphasis on hands-on experience in field identification and both field and lab-based research. Students will learn the fundamentals of fungal biology, how to classify and identify fungi, and the current trends in fungal research. Skills learned will be microscopy, specimen preparation, culturing fungi, and sequence-based classification. Students will have the opportunity to collect, curate, and identify a collection of fungi, and learn how DNA sequencing can be used for identification and ecological studies.
