Job Summary:

The University of Michigan Biological Station (UMBS) seeks to hire a motivated student or recent graduate to serve as a Biological Field Technician for the Summer 2024 season (mid-May through early-August). This individual will work closely with Biological Station staff and researchers to assist with many aspects of biological and ecological research. This position will change with the demands of summer field work and will include planning, executing, and refining research methods. This position will require working independently, one-on-one, and with larger field groups to aid in a variety of projects across UMBS campus. Therefore, this position requires the ability to work with a variety of people and learn new procedures quickly. The ideal candidate is naturally curious, adaptable to varying responsibilities, and a clear communicator. 

Job duties may include but are not limited to: 

  • Fieldwork: Setting up experiments, sample/data collection, tearing down experiments, carrying/transporting supplies

  • Sample processing and preparation: Drying samples, weighing samples

  • Sample analysis: Taking simple measurements such as pH, temperature, etc.

  • Data entry: Recording notes, entering data into spreadsheets, data cleaning and organization

Required Qualifications:

U-M students and external students are welcome to apply. Bachelor’s Degree preferred.

Biology, Ecology coursework experience or other STEM courses

Must enjoy working outside and be willing to work in all reasonable weather conditions.

Desired Qualifications:

Experience conducting fieldwork in an educational or research setting. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Detail oriented.

Willing and able to work outside in both heat and cool summer temperatures.

Interest and understanding of general biological processes. A background in introductory biology, ecology, or environmental science is encouraged but not required.

Attention to detail when learning and implementing new protocols.

Ability to complete repetitive tasks while maintaining accuracy and precision.

Ability to drive a University vehicle (van).

Ability to operate power tools.

Salary and Benefits:

Pay rate commensurate with experience and skills, ranging from $16-19 per hour, up to 40 hours per week. Housing and dining will be available at UMBS for the duration of employment.
