All individuals traveling abroad with the University of Michigan must follow the guidelines of the UM International Travel Policy.

Global Michigan Travel Designations

UM Travel Restriction Destinations

In restriction areas, travel for university purposes is generally prohibited due to extreme health, safety or security risks. University-related travel for undergraduate students is prohibited. Students cannot be required to participate in activities in this destination. Regular (annual) educational programs may be suspended. Evacuation of undergraduate students is required (and may be necessary for graduate or professional students).

Undergraduate students are not permitted to travel to Travel Restriction destinations. There are no exceptions to this rule.

UM graduate students may travel to locations with Travel Restrictions for University-related purposes if they complete the requirements outlined on the Global Michigan website.

UM Travel Warning Destinations

In warning areas, travel for university purposes is unadvisable due to a significant level of health, safety or security risks. Students cannot be required to participate in activities in this destination. Regular (annual) educational programs may be suspended.

The University of Michigan may decide to cancel or suspend programs in Travel Warning Destinations should conditions develop that warrant such action. The University of Michigan can evacuate students within a Travel Warning Destination if the need arises.

UM COVID-19 High Risk Destinations

In COVID-19 high risk areas, travel for university purposes is generally prohibited due to high health risks due to the pandemic. University-related travel for undergraduate students is prohibited. Students cannot be required to participate in activities in this destination. Regular (annual) educational programs may be suspended. Evacuation of undergraduate students is required (and may be necessary for graduate or professional students).

Undergraduate students are not permitted to travel to COVID-19 High Risk destinations. There are no exceptions to this rule.

UM graduate students may travel to locations with COVID-19 High Risk for University-related purposes if they complete the requirements outlined on the Global Michigan website.

UM COVID-19 Medium Risk Destinations

In COVID-19 medium risk areas, travel for university purposes is requires extra precautions due to midlevel health risks due to the pandemic.

The University of Michigan may decide to cancel or suspend programs in U-M COVID-19 Medium Risk Destinations should conditions worsen to that of a COVID-19 High Risk or entry is not possible. The University of Michigan can evacuate students within a COVID-19 Medium Risk Destination if the need arises.

U-M Safety and COVID-19 Travel Plans

All travellers to Travel Warning, Travel Restriction, COVID-19 High Risk, and COVID-19 Medium Risk locations must complete either a safety and travel plan to depart the country. Safety/travel plans MUST be submitted at least three weeks prior to departure. All safety/travel plans must be submited through MCompass.

If going to a Travel Warning or Restriction destination, complete the Individual Travel Safety Plan.

If going to a COVID-19 High Risk and COVID-19 Medium Risk location, complete the Individual COVID-19 Travel Plan.

If going to a country which is both a Travel Warning or Restriction AND a COVID-19 High/Medium Risk location, complete ONLY the Individual Travel Safety Plan.

Traveling with a group?

Groups complete separate safety plans than individuals. If traveling with a group, please complete the Group Safety Plan.
