All individuals traveling abroad with the University of Michigan must follow the guidelines of the UM International Travel Policy and the guidelines specified regarding UM Travel Warning and Restriction locations.
In warning areas, travel for university purposes is unadvisable due to a significant level of health, safety or security risks. Students cannot be required to participate in activities in this destination. Regular (annual) educational programs may be suspended.
In restriction areas, travel for university purposes is generally prohibited due to extreme health, safety or security risks. University-related travel for undergraduate students is prohibited. Students cannot be required to participate in activities in this destination. Regular (annual) educational programs may be suspended. Evacuation of undergraduate students is required (and may be necessary for graduate or professional students).
Both warning and restriction destinations require safety plans, which are approved by ITOC. All students traveling to one of these locations must submit a safety plan at least 3 weeks prior to departure from the U.S.
Individuals and groups should fill out different safety plans. Select one of the plans below to be directed to the safety plans in MCompass. For a PDF copy of the safety plans, check out the Group Safety Plan and Individual Safety Plan on U-M Box. Note that safety plans must be submited through MCompass.
